Rose Cosden, 89, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died peacefully in her sleep on January 25, 2019, following an extended illness. She was born on May 18, 1929, in New York, NY, to Benjamin and Ella Glovinsky, both of whom had emigrated from Russia. Rose valued education, graduating from Hunter College and obtaining a Master’s degree in special education. Shortly thereafter, she met the love of her life, George Cosden, and they soon were married. They enjoyed 46 years together until his death in 1999.
Rose and George moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1964. While very different than their home in New York, Rose found many ways to engage in the community. She was active professionally, teaching special education at the University of New Mexico and at the University of Albuquerque before it closed. In particular, she prepared students to teach special education, developing lifelong mentorship relationships with a number of her students. She was also very active in the Jewish community. She particularly enjoyed the Yiddish Club, a language she spoke at home with her parents (and which she spoke in her later home life with George when she didn’t want her children to know what they were saying).
After retirement, she and George traveled a great deal. She loved seeing and learning about new places and often attended Elderhostels, particularly those where she could learn more about international politics, about which she had strong opinions.
Writing was one of Rose’s lifelong passions. While modest about her skills, she won an award (named for Eleanor Roosevelt) for her writing in high school, and in her retirement authored four books: Help Your Child Up the Ladder, From Mourning to Morning: A Journey of Self Discovery and Recovery (written after George’s death), Give Me a Voice: Life Passages in Poems and Reflections, and Life is a Rollercoaster. . . Don't Get Off the Ride 'til It's Over. Her writings reflect her efforts to deal with the highs and lows in her life. Despite the sadness she experienced due to the losses of loved ones near her, she was strong and fought hard to enjoy life despite the progressive deterioration of her health.
Rose will be missed by her three children, Merith Cosden (Alan Spiker), Amie Lamborn (Mark Lamborn), and Evan Cosden (Carol Auslander); five grandchildren, Ruth, David, Michael, Adina and Joseph; and two great-grandchildren, Jadon and Maya.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday January 28, at 11:00 a.m. at FRENCH - University, 1111 University Blvd NE, followed by a short ceremony at the gravesite nearby.
Memorial donations may be made in Rose's name to The Macular Degeneration Foundation (www.eyesight.org), a disease from which she suffered.
