Ronald Raymond Dean was born in Raton, NM, on July 7, 1929, and died unexpectedly, doing what he loved to do, being a connoisseur, at an estate sale on Friday, July 29, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ilene Dean; his three children, Vicki Dean Mayhew and husband, Michael, Lori Dean Ringwald and husband, Paul, and Alan Dean of Payson, AZ; his three step-sons, Peter Larson and former wife, Cheri, Joe Larson and wife, Angie, of Los Angeles, CA, and Michael Larson and wife, Laura, of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by his brother, Hal and wife, Susan, of Las Vegas, NV, and grandchildren; Phil and Jeremy Mayhew, Jessica Scott, Elizabeth Schichtel, Jessica and Josh Ringwald, Renee Schoening, Matthew, Joey, Karl, Claire and Hannah Larson; and 9 great-grandchildren.
As a boy, growing up in Raton, he liked to jump on and ride the freight trains going up the "road tunnel" and then wait for another train to jump on for the ride back down. His first job, when the family moved to Albuquerque, was setting pins at a bowling alley on Central. He had musical talent in both voice and piano. He was a graduate of Albuquerque High School and served two years in the army, completing Officer Training School. He began his small business career by owning and operating a Chevron Station, calling it "Dean Chevron" at San Mateo and Candelaria and moving it downtown to 4th and Silver calling it "Downtown Chevron." He became a stockbroker for E.F. Hutton, for a short time, but liked working outside and not sitting behind a desk. He loved to sing and was a square dance caller for many years, which led to a brief stint as an auctioneer. The travel kept him away from his family so he moved a new business north on 4th street near I-40 and together with the love of his life, Ilene, they built Amigo RV, which eventually became Aloha RV, which specialized in sales and service of RV's. Ron did very well in the service business because he was so honest and dependable. He was self-taught in so many areas, including construction and developing a subdivision in Bernalillo and building a 4-Plex and a beautiful home in the north valley. His retirement was spent nurturing tomato plants, feeding the hummingbirds, tending to many four-legged doggie friends over the years and going to estate sales. He wore many hats and will be dearly missed for his integrity, loyalty and sense of humor. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas.
