Roger Tyler

Roger L. Tyler left this world peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 12:38am. His long battle with frontotemporal lobe dementia and Alzheimer’s came to a close. He is now at peace. Roger was born on January 27, 1949 in Datto, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Claudette Winburn.

Roger is survived by his wife of 48 years, Paulette Tyler; daughter, Rachelle Tyler-Johnson and husband James (JJ) of Springboro, OH; son, Travis Tyler and wife Ashley Hunter of Haslet, TX; grandsons, Trevor Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Tanner Johnson of Springboro, OH; grandson, Riley Tyler and granddaughter, Bridget Tyler of Haslet, TX; brothers Pete (Betsy) Winburn, Michael (Lynn) Winburn; sister, Kathy (Bernie) Freeman all of Albuquerque, NM; aunts and uncle John (Betty) Richardson and Shirley Shubert all of Loudon, TN and Linda Gaston, Lenoir City, TN; Tyler Family, Corning, AR area and many cousins, nieces, nephews; and dear friends.

Roger moved with his parents and brother, Pete, to Albuquerque, NM in 1952. He graduated in 1967 from Sandia High School Roger served in the US Coast Guard from 1967 to 1971 as an Electrician and honorably discharged as a First-Class Petty Officer. Roger graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BS in Engineering with an option in Computer Science in 1976. While in college, Roger was President of Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE Honors Engineering Society) which assisted with building the first electronic scoreboard in “The Pit” (UNM basketball arena). After 34 years of service, Roger retired November 2009 from Northrop Grumman. During his career, his company changed hands many times before it was bought out by NG. Roger and family lived in Albuquerque, NM, Sierra Vista, AZ, San Antonio, TX, Richmond, VA, and Huntsville, AL. Travel for work sent Roger to many locations across the US. He always commented that he worked for the same company but only changed his desk. When not at work, Roger enjoyed league bowling, softball, western and square dancing, coaching, umpiring, and serving as a board member for Roadrunner Little League, antique shopping, collecting Children’s and Young Adult books as well as Christmas books and Biographies. Roger loved attending book fairs especially in Nashville and author signing in many states. He enjoyed meeting both public and private authors and chatting with them. Roger so enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports and enjoyed long talks with Bridget. When he retired, Roger volunteered at the Madison AL Public Library and served on the board for the Friends of the Madison Library until his health starting failing. A once in a lifetime river wine cruise in 2013 to Portugal with friends, Therise and Walt Collier, was a wonderful memory to share with Roger. In 2013, Roger and Paulette retired to Springboro, OH. Roger always maintained his membership in IEEE and reached the status of Senior Member, he was a member of the American Legion # 598 in Kettering and Christ United Methodist Church. Paulette is a member of P.E.O. and Roger enjoyed attending socials with Paulette as a BIL.

Paulette and Roger closed each day with- “On my bed I remember you, I think of you through the watches of the night.” Psalms 63:6. Roger was strong and handled his illness a day at a time over 10 years. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7. The family is thankful for the love and caring concern Roger received from River Oaks Special Alzheimer’s Care Center and Miami Valley Hospice. Graveside Services for Roger L. Tyler will be Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque.
