Robert Lewis (Iwanow) Young

Robert (Bob) L. Young, 85, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2020, surrounded by his family.

Bob is survived by his wife, Margrit, of nearly 59 years; sons, Viktor Ivanov and Alexander Young; and loving grandchildren, Cristina, Adam, and Evan Young. Putting family above all else, Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone.

Born to Russian parents—Elizabeth and Victor Iwanow—Bob, his parents, and sister Nina immigrated to the United States in 1950. Bob proudly became a United States citizen and joined the Air Force in 1952. He faithfully served for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Bob continued his civil service for another 20 years, ultimately retiring from the United States Geological Survey.

Despite being legally blind, Bob loved tinkering with computers and software. He was undeterred by obstacles and had dogged determination to ultimately prevail; which is how he tackled everything in life.

Bob requested to be buried with military honors at Santa Fe National Cemetery. According to Bob’s wishes, the family has opted for a small, intimate graveside service on Friday, March 27, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Live Water Foundation (livewater.org), as a way of giving back to other veterans.
