Robert Austin Warriner

Lt. Col. Robert A. Warriner, US Army, Retired, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Helen; his parents, Oga and Harlan; his brother, Jack; and his sister, Dorothy. He is survived by his three daughters, Shawn Darby, Trudy White and husband Bob, and Carol Wasowski and husband Walt; four grandchildren, Andrew White and wife, Kristin, Emily Bloch and husband, Jeff, Scott Wasowski and wife, Sami, and Amy Wasowski; four great-grandchildren Matilda, Cordelia, Hawkins, and Sage.

Robert was born at Crazy Woman Creek, Wyoming. After graduating from the Univ. of Wyoming in 1943 as a civil engineer, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. He was on active duty during World War II as part of the Corps of Engineers building the Burma Road, which was used to transport troops and supplies between India and China. He served on reserve duty from 1946 to 1968 with a return to active duty during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at Ft. Lewis, WA from 1950-1951. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Bob’s engineering career included airplane design at Land Air in Cheyenne, WY, solId propellant rocket design at Thiokol, in Utah, and aerospace engineering at Hughes Aircraft/Aerospace in El Segundo, CA. His work at Hughes involved designing and launching satellites. He was sent to Munich, Germany to help coordinate building the solar panel component of Intelsat VI with Messerschmitt. While in Cheyenne, he and a partner also established a surveying company. He retired in 1985.

Bob had many interests over the years. He and Helen were active in bowling leagues, played golf and bridge. There were also many family fishing trips, both stream and deep sea. He was also an avid hunter. As part of reserve duty, he competed in pistol competitions around the country, including the National Matches held at Camp Perry, Ohio. After retirement he and Helen traveled to many parts of the world and shared a love of good food and music during their trips. After Helen’s death he became an ardent duplicate bridge player and achieved his American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Silver Life Master at age 95.

Playing poker once a week was also a joy, after retirement. In later years, he shared many bridge games, concerts, travel, and time together with his friend and companion, Pat Zick. They shared many happy times.

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, September 24, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH-Lomas with interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, where he will be buried next to Helen.
