Robert "Chip" Oliver Ware

d. October 21, 2015

Robert "Chip" Oliver Ware was born in Evanston, Illinois on March 16, 1948 and passed away in Albuquerque on October 21, 2015. He grew up in Hinsdale, IL where some of his fondest childhood memories were of exploring in the nearby woods along Salt Creek. He spent summers with his two sisters, Vickie and Carol, at Eagle Lake, west of Milwaukee, visiting their "Grammy" who imparted a deep love of nature coupled with her infectious wisdom. His keen sense of observation was apparent from an early age. This opened up the world of art to him, for which he proved to have a precocious talent.
Chip graduated with a BA from Southern Illinois University in 1970. He continued his education at the University of New Mexico, receiving a BFA in photography, an MA in history of photography, culminating with a doctorate in modern art history in 1997, focusing on the work of the photographer, Walker Evans. He went on to teach numerous upper level courses in art history at the University of New Mexico, Columbia College in Chicago and the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Santa Fe Community College.
Chip Ware was the curator of the exquisite Raymond Jonson Gallery. Jonson left a rich legacy to UNM, including his home that housed the gallery. Chip curated many exhibitions for artists honoring the vision of Raymond Jonson. He produced the Annual Juried Graduate Exhibitions for many years. He had an enormous impact on undergraduate and graduate students and scholars from around the US.
Chip and his wife, Nancy, shared a love of the arts. They enjoyed camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains and traveling around the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. Chip is survived by his loving wife Nancy Marsh, beloved dog Riley, devoted sister Carol, step-mother Liz, half-sisters Kerri and Kelli, niece Katie and nephew Ben.
Everyone who knew Chip loved and respected him - his quiet thoughtful insights, and his gentle, artistic touch in all aspects of life.

There will be a small gathering of family and friends to honor Chip and to celebrate his life. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the University of New Mexico Art Museum, with the specific designation "in support of the Raymond Jonson Collection", Art in the School (www.artintheschool.org), or to a charity of your choice. Please visit our online guestbook for Chip at www.FrenchFunerals.com.
