Robert L. Garcia, age 83, passed on December 8, 2018, surrounded by his Guardian Angel, his Lord Jesus Christ, and his God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha and Nevarez Garcia Jr.; his son, Larry B. Garcia; and brother, Bernie.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Santillanes, of Albuquerque; son, Robert James, of Albuquerque; brothers, Richard W. from Albuquerque, Ernest R. from Vancouver, Washington; and sister, Irene, from California.
Robert served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War, earning two battle stars. During that period he visited Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Midway, Indo China (Vietnam), Hawaii, and a majority of the western United States. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, he worked briefly for the U.S. Post Office. He went on to work for thirty two years with the Bureau of Indian Affairs retiring as Chief of Contracts & Grants having supervised up to thirty two co-workers. He then worked at UNM, retiring, again, after 16 years.
He was a member of American Legion Post 99 and the Loyal Order at the Moose Family Center Lodge 1517, where he served in various Chairs and was elected Governor. He enjoyed all his friends at the lodge and made many new friends.
A Rosary will be recited Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Therese Little Flower Church, 300 Mildred Ave. NW, with a Mass Service to be held Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 9:30 a.m., also at St. Therese Little Flower Church. Robert will be laid to rest Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
