Robert Leonard "Bob" Hughes

Robert (Bob) Leonard Hughes, age 85, of Albuquerque, NM passed away at home from colon cancer Thursday May 12, 2016. He was born November 1, 1930 in Reading, PA to Leonard William and Elsie Marie Shenkle Hughes. After graduating with the class of 1948 from Hagerstown High School, Bob went to work as a draftsman for Pangborn Corporation in Maryland. He served in the US Air Force from 1950-1954 during the Korean War. After the service, he returned to Pangborn and attended Hagerstown Junior college. He married Helen Agnes Black, a hometown gal, in 1956 and then graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a BSME in 1958. They then moved to Albuquerque, NM to start working at Sandia Corporation where he designed telescopes and later filmed high speed video of tests rocketing down the test track. The family moved to Cedar Crest, NM in June of 1967. Bob was a Boy Scout Leader for both his sons, earning his woodbadge at Philmont Scout Ranch. He volunteered twice to archeoastronomically survey Chaco Canyon. Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years Helen, Son Brian Robert (Randine) Hughes and grandchildren Zoey Krista (Kevin) VanDuren, Leo Brian, and Jamie Lynn Hughes, great grandson Vincent Gerard Lucero, son Kevin Stuart Hughes, daughter Kathleen Diane (Jason) Vargas, grandchildren Stephanie Ann and David Alan Vargas and Brother Henry William (Sherry) Hughes. He is preceded in death by his parents and son John Mark Hughes. Services will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2016, 10:00 a.m. at FRENCH - Wyoming with Pastor Benjamin Larzelere III Officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to thank everyone at Presbyterian Hospice for their concern and excellent care.
