Retired Major Richard (Dick) Clayton Wells, USMC, 88, was called to his eternal resting place on October 30, 2018. As he left this world to join his late wife Patricia Gagne Wells, he was surrounded by his devoted family. Richard is survived by his sister, Marjorie Woodin of Swartz Creek, MI, his daughters Judith G. Rice, Jean Ann Plummer (Jim) of Albuquerque, NM, his grandchildren Jo Ann Rice of Chandler, AZ, Jason Rice of Palmer, AK, and his great-granddaughter Hannah Rice of Chandler, AZ.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his siblings, Margaret, Henry, Herbert, Clifford, Donald, Eleanor, Ray and Arnold.
Richard entered this world on February 19, 1930 in Danbury, CT, born to Clayton and Margaret Wells and was the seventh of ten children. He was educated in the Danbury school system and was a graduate of Danbury High School in 1947. In 1948, Richard enlisted in the Marine Corps and, after much thought and consideration, decided to become a career serviceman. During his 25 years, Richard traveled the world and held a variety of positions at stateside bases. He served in combat during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Wounded in the Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Despite long assignments away from his family, he loved the military life. He truly believed that "Once a Marine, Always a Marine."
In 1968, Richard found himself stationed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque, NM where he taught at the Nuclear Weapons School for two years. This was one of his most enjoyable and rewarding experiences during his time in the military and New Mexico became a very special place for his family.
Richard was a dedicated, loving husband and father. He loved to cook, garden and was an accomplished artist. Richard believed it was his responsibility to be involved in his children's lives. When Judy became enamored with horses, he stepped up and helped to build the new stables at Kirtland Air Force Base. Because of Jean's preference for art and music, he took guitar lessons and sacrificed hours helping her with her own artistic endeavors.
After retiring from the military, Richard and Patty returned to Albuquerque where they built their dream home and he began a new career as an Accountant for ENV Services. When Richard finally retired from his second career, he and Patty purchased a motorhome and spent time traveling across the country visiting family and friends. One of their greatest pleasures was watching their grandchildren grow into truly remarkable young adults. They were happiest when celebrating the successes of their children and grandchildren.
After Patricia passed in 1994, Richard returned to his childhood hometown for a class reunion where he became reacquainted with his former prom date Nancy Moffat. Nancy and Richard started a long-distance relationship that lasted until Nancy's death in 2006. Together they enjoyed many adventures including a trip to Australia and New Zealand. Richard was grateful for Nancy's companionship and affection.
If you were to ask Richard what was his life's greatest gift, he would tell you that it was the arrival of his great-granddaughter, Hannah. He reveled in her academic achievements and was particularly pleased to find out that she too had an artistic flair. Just this year, he attended Hannah's high school graduation ceremony and his cheers could be heard above the clamor of the crowd as she walked up to accept her diploma. He often told his friends that grandchildren are wonderful, but great-grandchildren are truly a blessing.
During his years in Albuquerque, Richard was a faithful member of the Kirtland Air Force Base Chapel, his friends from church have become like an extended family. They were there with prayers and support during Richard's most difficult moments and supported his family for which we are truly grateful.
