Major Richard A. Mayes (Ret.), 99, Marine, WWII veteran, Naval aviator, and Corsair pilot, went to sit on Jesus’ lap on Wednesday March 21, 2018. Richard was born on February 12, 1919 in Dallas, Texas. Richard was charismatic, loving, intelligent, funny, witty and absolutely loved being a Marine. He had a childlike wonderment for all things surrounding him and kept his keen sense of awareness until the very end. His smile was genuine and full of light and his wisdom and personality were beyond comparison. Some words of wisdom Richard would often share were, “Don’t take any wooden nickels” and “Keep your wings level.” Richard touched many lives and continued to do so later in life.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Lila Mayes; his step-children, Victor and wife Rochelle, Ryan, Natalie and husband Aaron, and his grandchildren, Tyler, Dakota, Elijah, Ella, Alyssa, Juleah, Jonessah, Selah, and Judah. He is also survived by his beloved fur children, Julio and Bentley. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Richard Mayes Sr.; his mother, Viola Carpenter-Mayes and an infant son.
