A 42-year New Mexico resident and teacher passed away Wednesday February 13, 2013, after a long struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease. Richard met his wife of 44 years, Theresa M. Isaacson, in Biloxi Mississippi at their Officer Basic Course. Both served during the Vietnam Conflict and were able to travel to Europe during their active military duty. After his time on active duty, Richard joined the reserves where he became the liaison officer at Cibola High School helping many young students attain their dream of attending the Air Force Academy. After many faithful years of service, he was able to retire as a Lieutenant Colonel. Richard also found a passion for teaching following in his parents, John and Victoria Isaacson's, footsteps. His teaching tenure started in Belen New Mexico in 1972 and ended in 2012 at Cibola High School. Few know, but Richard along with seven other teachers helped design Cibola High School (West Mesa West) in 1976. During his tenure as a teacher, Richard taught a plethora of subjects ranging from Electronics, Computer Aided Drafting, Math, and much more. Richard was also able to instruct at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland GEMS program helping young students advance their knowledge in science and math. His teaching career spanned more than four decades and touched many lives and generations in Albuquerque. Richard is survived by his wife, Theresa M. Isaacson, and his two daughters Erin Martin - Serrano and Robin Eskelson. Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday February 20th at 10:00 a.m. at French - Rio Rancho 1950 Pine Rd NE, Rio Rancho, NM. North of Intersection of Northern and Unser Blvd. Burial will take place the same day at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to either ALS at / or New Mexico Muscular Dystrophy Association in Richard's name.
