Richard Percival Brown

April 14, 1933 — April 23, 2021

Richard "Dick" Brown, 88. Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle passed away on April 23, 2021.

Dick Brown grew up in Cementon, Pennsylvania. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University in 1955. He had a successful career in the computer industry in the Northeast, earning 9 patents for his research and development work. He began his career at IBM, where he worked in computer design for 5 years, then moved to Philco, managing the design of the world's fastest computer system at that time. He also worked as a systems engineer at RCA and a design manager at Honeywell, where he eventually headed the newly formed Systems Engineering organization.

He retired from engineering and pursued his interest in the social sciences, earning a Master of Education degree with a specialty in psychology from Cambridge College in 1991.

Dick married Lois Marion Zimmerman in 1955, in Allentown Pennsylvania. His mother Ruth, who was a medical doctor, introduced her son to Lois, who was one of Ruth's favorite young nurses in the anesthesia department at Allentown Hospital. The couple married and had one daughter, Alane Susan Brown, born in 1959. The family lived in Acton, Massachusetts throughout the 70s and 80s. Lois and Dick were a loving couple whose marriage spanned 63 years.

Dick and Lois moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1993, the year their granddaughter, Leigh Brown, was born in nearby Durango, Colorado. Dick enjoyed exploring the beauty of New Mexico and surrounding states. He was a pivotal leader in the Senior Hiking program of Albuquerque Senior Affairs. He loved to go on exploratory hikes with a friend or two to scope out a hike, then later bring groups of seniors out on those hikes. Dick made many friends through his beloved hiking program. He was known for his intelligence, dry sense of humor, and his ability to mentor others.

Richard is survived by his wife, Lois; his daughter Alane, his granddaughter Leigh, his brother Raymond, and an extended family of nieces and nephews. He died from a stroke after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease. Memorial donations may be made in Richard's name to the Alzheimer's Association.
