Rex E. Lewis, 96, WWII Veteran and resident of Albuquerque since 1945, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2015. Rex was born in Nash County, North Carolina to Jaspar Lewis and Sophie Daughteridge on February 23, 1919, the second of four boys. When Rex was six years old his father passed away and his mother, unable to financially care for four boys, put Rex and his younger brother Ben Lewis in the Barum Springs Orphanage. Rex loved sports and played baseball all through high school. On June 22, 1941 Rex enlisted in to the Army Air Corps where he proudly served his country as a bomb sight mechanic in the American and Asiatic Pacific Theater during the war. When he returned from the war he was stationed here in Albuquerque where he met and married Elizabeth D. Baca on March 16, 1944. On November 30, 1945 Rex received an honorable discharge. Rex was employed as a truck driver for Coca Cola, Nabisco and finally Keebler Co. Rex spent the last 15 years residing with his daughter Debbie, husband Bret and his three grandchildren. Rex was a special part of this household and was dearly loved by his family and all those who knew him. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by daughters, Debbie Sant (Bret) and Carol Tafoya (Larry); grandsons, Brian, Jayson and Jeffery Sant; and brother-in-law, Paul Baca. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Sharon; and brothers, George, Ben and Nick Lewis. A service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015, 11:00 a.m., at FRENCH - University. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Friends may visit FRENCH - University, Thursday, July 9, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the NM Alzheimer's Association.
