Rena (Atencio) Dragoo

Rena Dragoo, cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away suddenly at home on Monday, May 17, 2021. She was born in Los Ojos, NM on Sept. 22, 1937 to Jesus M. and Maria R. Atencio. She moved to Albuquerque as a child and resided in the North Valley.

Rena lived a life for others, with her family at the very center of it. Her role as a grandmother was the one she cherished most, and she and her husband Roger were instrumental in helping their daughter Dianne and son-in-law Patrick raise their children Diego and Marena.

As devoted to her family as she was, Rena was also intensely community-minded. She volunteered at every school her daughter attended, from kindergarten to university, and was very active in her church, serving in a number of ministries. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Santa Maria, for 48 years.

Rena was a playful, spirited redhead with a quick wit, boundless generosity, and a heart of gold. Everyone she met was captivated by her charm and sense of humor. There was a growing list of family and friends who requested her incomparable beans and chile (red and green!). Rena never met a stranger; she had friends from all walks of life and had the ability to make everyone feel special. She was always more interested in learning about you than talking about herself (unless it was to brag about her grandchildren). She was deeply loved and will be missed endlessly by her family and friends.

Rena was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marie R. Maestas. She is survived by her husband, Roger L. Dragoo; daughter, Dianne Dragoo; son-in-law Patrick F. Trujillo; grandchildren Diego and Marena Trujillo; sister, Margaret Rodriguez; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A viewing and rosary will take place on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 9:00 am., followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Ave NW. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
