Ramos (Ray) Barela, Jr. was called Home on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He was born in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Truchas, NM. After moving to the Espanola Valley with his family, he graduated from McCurdy High School, attended York College in Nebraska, and finished advanced degrees from Highland University and UNM. After an eight-year career with the post office, he answered the call to become a professional educator and was a lifelong advocate for children. He was a pillar in the community, touching the lives of many at elementary schools in Albuquerque. His personal passions were gardening, travel, painting and his mountain cabin. He and his wife and soulmate, Ruth Sanchez Barela, spent 56 years of love and devotion serving their family, friends and church. She was called Home in 2004. He is survived by his daughters Iona Barela and Ivalee Jimenez, and her husband Conrad Jimenez; four grandchildren Mariah Barela, Kevin Soria, Kaylyn Soria, and Kelly Soria. A Celebration of his Life will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 812 Edith NE on Monday, July 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Ray Barela Memorial Fund c/o Second Presbyterian Church.
