It is with great sadness that the family of Ramon "Ray" Vigil announces his sudden passing away on Sunday, June 20, 2021, at the middle age of 74.
Ramon was born April 17, 1947, to Jose and Teresina Vigil in Albuquerque.
He went to Albuquerque High School where he played basketball and he graduated in 1965. He was a forever Bulldog.
Ramon went on to the University of New Mexico where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business. It was there he discovered "Chicano Studies" and became very passionate about equality for the minority.
One of his favorite activities were the mountains of New Mexico. He and his best friend Linda went on many backpacking adventures. They hiked many trails together, ate the "tasty" dehydrated food, fell in streams, were chased by a bull, saw many elk and bighorn sheep. The adventure most talked about was finding the lost hikers by accident, they were looking for a lake 2 miles in the opposite direction. Ramon and Linda were going to write a book of their adventures and call it "Is there a lake around here?". For Ramon, the best part of all the backpacking trips was seeing the beauty of New Mexico. In later years he discovered the Valles Caldera in the Jemez where he and Linda continued their hiking adventures.
Ramon loved to golf the courses of New Mexico. He was very proud when he made a hole in one at Santa Ana.
Ramon became a teacher at TVI/CNM where he taught Electronics. He made a difference to many of his student's academic work. He would even receive a standing ovation on the last day of classes. He retired from TVI/CNM.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed working in his legacy backyard. He had a beautiful rose garden where he would sit with Linda and they would watch the shapes of the clouds, the birds, or the bunnies. His backyard is a certified wildlife habitat.
Ramon had a very warm heart and lap for cats. With his family he fostered many cats but became a foster failure with Dora, short for aDORAble. She became the Vigil cat. Ramon was very proud he helped save 3 kittens that took up residency under the shed. After a terrible snowstorm, he made sure to dig them out. The kittens were later taken to Street Cat Hub.
He wanted the best for everyone in his life. Ramon believed strongly in equal rights and democracy. He believed society should take time to stop and smell the enchiladas.
He was enormously proud of his children and their accomplishments in nursing and teaching.
He is survived by his wife, Linda of 36 years of togetherness. Their love for each other will last forever.
His children include his daughter, Carmen, and her husband Max, and his two sons, Connor and Cameron; Tina and her husband Ryan, and her daughter, Maya; Carlos and his wife Sandra, with their children, Andres, Naomi, Niamiah; his sisters, Juanita and Tomasita; many nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Victoria Sanchez; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; and Dora - his cat - short for aDORAble.
His family will miss him.
