Ralph Fortag

d. March 5, 2021

The family of Ralph Marion Fortag is saddened to announce his passing on Friday, March 5, 2021 at the age of 90 years.

Born September 8, 1930, in Ashley, Illinois, he was the son of the late Leo and Elsie Fortag.  He is survived by his loving wife, Lotte and family Harvey, Rositta and Ashley; his three siblings, Edward (Tillie), Kenneth, Alford (Mary Ellen); grandsons, Mark (Kathy) and Richard; great-grandson, Cody, daughter-in law, Irene; and numerous other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Claire; sons, Leroy and Richard; grand-daughters, Jenny, Mary Lou and family, Priscilla and family.

He was from a remarkable generation that survived the great depression and war who lived by the motto, "use it up, wear it out, make do or do without." True to this motto, Ralph was often found tinkering in his garage or farmhouse to repair "whatever." He served his country honorably and nobly in the United States Army.  He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam war receiving many distinguished honors.  He was awarded the Purple Heart for critical wounds he endured during combat and numerous lesser awards and campaign ribbons for his service.

He was a very likable and outgoing man who would strike up a conversation with anyone he met.  He was a Jack of all trades: soldier, rancher, tree farmer, bar owner, etc.  He enjoyed Nascar, fishing, camping, playing pinochle with friends, peanut butter, M & M's, a Samuel Adams, feeding and watching his birds, and his beloved pet, Toby.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of New Mexico for their thoughtful service and tender care.  He also had a special place in his heart for his loving caregivers, Lucille and Dora.

Due to COVID restrictions, private military services will be held at Santa Fe National Cemetery for immediate family only.
