Quincy Shaw

August 29, 1925 — October 10, 2021

Quincy Wilson Shaw passed away peacefully in his home in Corrales, New Mexico, on Sunday, October 10, 2021. He was born on Horseshoe Ranch just outside the small coal mining town of Dawson, New Mexico, on Saturday, August 29, 1925. During his high school years, he excelled in football and basketball. After high school, he joined the Navy and faithfully served in World War II in the South Pacific on the USS Lowry (DD-770). One of Quincy’s main command posts was to take shifts manning the Optical Range Finder and the Radar Range. He would keep track of the visual incoming and relayed the logistics to the computer deck when under attack by Kamikazes. All came together in a coordinated effort, when firing was ordered. After the war, he met his wife, Harriet Nakasone while working overseas. They were married in Taos, New Mexico, and settled in Corrales to raise their family. Quincy designed and built his home in Corrales from the ground up, along with his wife and little girls. He continued his career with the Army Corp of Engineers in Albuquerque as a draftsman. He contributed calculations and design work to numerous damns and channels including Cochiti Damn, Tramway Blvd, as well as Amstad Lake in South Texas, and Trinidad Lake in Colorado. Quincy loved his home in the Village of Corrales and devoted his expertise and time organizing “Corrales United,” a group of concerned Corrales villagers committed to protecting their rural hometown in the late 1980s. The efforts of "Corrales United" succeeded in diverting the Coors Bypass Road onto Hwy 528 instead of a six-lane thoroughfare through Corrales. During those years, Quincy wrote and contributed his expert knowledge in the Corrales’ local newspaper. He loved the great outdoors and spent all his free time with his family in the various mountains across New Mexico. He took pleasure in and valued family togetherness. Quincy instilled a love for the outdoors in his children and grandchildren and taught us all to lookout for one another and help others. He was a war hero and loving father who captivated us all with his stories of history and adventure. The world is a better place because of Quincy Shaw.

Quincy was preceded in death by his wife, and one daughter. He is survived by his three daughters and their families. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, 10:00 a.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd NE.
