Porfirio "Porfy" Fernandez, 81, of Albuquerque, NM, passed from our lives to His Heavenly Father on August 22, 2015. He is preceded in death by his father, Amadeo Fernandez; his mother, Demecia Fernandez of Truchas, NM, and his son-in-law, Gary "Bennett" Lopez of Albuquerque. Porfy was born August 20, 1934 in Truchas, NM, where he grew up and flourished in the Catholic Church and its community. Porfy graduated from high school in Santa Cruz, NM in 1954 before joining the U.S. Army, where he served from 1955 to 1957. In October of 1958, he married Lydia Pacheco, his wife of almost 57 years. The two made their home in Grants, NM, where they raised their four children and six grandchildren for 58 years. While in Grants, Porfy worked for 34 years as a Uranium Mill Operator. After retirement, he worked for the Parks and Recreation Department in Grants. He was an avid sports fan, never missing his UNM Lobos or Denver Broncos games. Porfy moved to Albuquerque in January of 2015, where he resided until his passing. Porfy's happiness was spending quality time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Lydia Fernandez, and his children, Debbie Fernandez of Albuquerque, Rita and Chris Montano of Grants, Lionel Fernandez of Albuquerque, and Lisa Lopez and Matthew Myers of Albuquerque. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Danielle Montano, Diandra and Jeremy Salcido, Samantha Montano, Valerie Hernandez, Matthew Hernandez and Stephen Montano; his sisters, Gloria Fernandez of Truchas, NM and Pilar Valverde and husband George of Albuquerque; his close friend and second son, Henry Lucero, and his grandcats, KC and Zera, whom he loved so much. A public viewing will be held Friday, August 28, 2015 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at FRENCH - Westside. Rosary will be recited Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 10:15 a.m., with a Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Community, 5415 Fortuna Road NW, Albuquerque, NM 87105. A Graveside Service at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd., will be held following the services.
