Phyllis Florentine Cox, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 24, 2015. She was born on October 18, 1925 in Evanston, Illinois to Gladys Helen and Florence Benjamin Schlung. She was married to Donald Norman Cox on October 7, 1950 in Kansas City, Missouri. Together with three children they moved to Albuquerque in 1955 where their family soon grew with two more children. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her son, James Norman Cox of Richland, Wisconsin. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald. She is also survived by her sons, Michael (wife Ellen), Dan (wife Chris), and daughters, Ranjit and Susan (husband Jerry); her grandsons, Sat Darshan, Donnie, Harimandir, Benjamin, Timothy; granddaughters, Guru Shabd, Dr. Katie, Emily; and great-grandson, Armit Hari. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Lystad of Honolulu, and her brother, Roger Schlung of Washington State. She studied music and theater at Lawrence University. She was active in the Albuquerque theater scene and stared in plays such as Arsenic and Old Lace, The Fantastiks, and Oklahoma. She was a Mountain Doers and Thunderbird square dancer, a shrewd bridge player, and an avid bowler. She belonged to the Sonata Women's Club, was a certified EMT with East Mountain Fire Fighters and belonged to the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She and her husband were passionate volunteers who worked with programs such as Meals on Wheels. She served the military community for many years at the Kirtland Military Base Commissary. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 30, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Holy Child Parish in Tijeras, NM. A Committal Service will be Tuesday, March 31, 2015, 2:15 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. She is greatly missed by all her family and will always be remembered.
