Phillip James Lujan Sr., 78, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was called to his eternal resting place on October 18, 2021.
He entered this world on May 1, 1943, in Trinidad, Colorado born to Emma (Lucero) and Avade Lujan. He moved to Albuquerque against his own volition as a teen, but ultimately made Albuquerque his home and raised his family in Albuquerque’s South Valley. However, Colorado was always in his heart, and he never missed an opportunity to visit the friends, family, and places that meant so much to him growing up. Phillip was a self-reliant jack of all trades and a master of most – gardening, delivering newspapers, fixing things, the building trades (all of them), sarcasm, humor, drinking coffee, and most importantly, being a dad and grandpa. He dedicated himself to the family business he established – Esperanza Bookbindery – and became a well-known master bookbinder that embraced the artistry of his life’s craft of restoring old books and binding new books that would withstand the test of time. He graced his friends and family with his unparalleled patience, honesty, good humor, and quiet confidence that will be forever remembered but never replaced. He enjoyed his life, remembered his experiences fondly, and made them memorable for the people around him.
Phillip is preceded in death by his parents, Avade Lujan and Emma Lujan; by his brother, Orlando Lujan; and by his sister, Patricia (“Patsy”) Rocco. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Lujan-Canner and son-in-law, Craig Canner; son, Phillip Lujan Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jeanne Marie Lujan; daughter, Corine Jaramillo; daughter, Roberta Chavez; daughter, Catherine Lujan; daughter, Elaine Lujan and son-in-law, Chris Melendrez; his grandchildren, Alexandra Pacheco, Jared Lujan and wife Angelica Lujan, Rudy Jaramillo, Dominic Jaramillo, Daniel Pacheco and wife Savannah Pacheco, Gabriel Jaramillo, Aaron Lujan, Jamal Mayhew Jr., Aurelius Salandre, Eco Chavez, Sol Chavez, Ivy Chavez, Kennedy Melendrez, and Prudence Melendrez; and his great-grandchildren, Aidan, Amelia, James, and Juliette Lujan and Milo Pacheco. He leaves behind his siblings, Carol Gallegos and Eddie Lujan. He also leaves behind his dear and loving friend, Sara Jurado and her daughter, Jenny.
