Peter Patterson

July 12, 1930 — October 24, 2024

Peter Francis Patterson, 94, of Albuquerque passed away on October 24, 2024. Peter was born on July 12, 1930 in Rock Springs, WY to Francis and Flora Patterson. In his formative years, he enjoyed big game hunting with his father in the wilds of southwest Wyoming. Pete graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1948 and enrolled at the University of Wyoming. He joined the Air Force after his freshman year and served at Bolling AFB in Washington DC. He later transferred to the Air Force Reserve and returned to UW where he was active in ROTC and participated in shooting competitions. Graduating in 1953, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Peter went to work for the Ohio Oil Company in 1953. His career in the oil business spanned 38 years and took him and his family to several locations in Wyoming: Oregon Basin, Cody, McFadden, and Casper. His work also took him outside Wyoming to Ekalaka Montana, Sidney Nebraska, and Bakersfield California.

He met Shirley, his wife of 64 years, while on assignment in Ekalaka. He supported, encouraged and showed pride for their three children: Mary, Mark and John. He was a loving and supportive grandfather to Xavier and Raquel. He was a quiet and unassuming man with a dry sense of humor and fierce independence.

Pete & Shirley retired to Cody Wyoming in 1991. They were active in their local Catholic parish and assisted the Bishop of the Diocese of Cheyenne. He and Shirley sponsored fun family get-togethers in Cody, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Pismo Beach, Durango, Pagosa Springs, Sedona, Maui, Jasper, Banff, Telluride, and Steamboat Springs. They took several international trips and cruises during retirement, including one trip to Rome in 1993 when he was granted an audience with Pope John Paul II. Pete & Shirley moved to Albuquerque in 2010 to be near family.

Pete was predeceased by his father Francis in 1982, his mother Flora in 1992, and his wife Shirley in 2021. He is survived by all his children, Mary Moya and husband Ron, Mark Patterson and John Patterson and wife Pat, grandchildren, Xavier Moya and wife Jasmin; Raquel Moya and step-grandson, Robbie Breadmont.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of The Montebello on Academy, Visiting Angels Home Care Services and Rio Grande Hospice for their attentive and diligent care for our dad and grandpa, Peter.
