Peter Stewart Doty

June 11, 1963 — March 4, 2023

Peter Stewart Doty, 59, native of Orono, Maine, and long-time resident of San Francisco and Albuquerque, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 4, 2023, of natural causes.
Peter was born in Ravenna, Ohio, on Tuesday, June 11, 1963. The youngest of three children of University of Maine Professor C. Stewart Doty and Jean S. Doty, Peter grew up in Orono and graduated from Orono High School in 1981.
Not long after graduation, Peter moved to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco where he lived for many years as an artist. He worked in a variety of media: fine art photography, writing, painting, tie-dye, songwriting, acting on stage and screen, printmaking, filmmaking, costuming, and staging political protests. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from City College San Francisco in 1991. Peter's photography and signature photo-collages were displayed in galleries in Northeast Harbor, Maine; New York City; and San Francisco.
Peter had an eclectic style that could be summed up in his email name, "Peter_The_Hippy," and he enjoyed acting as an extra in The Doors and other movies. He also acted and sang on stage in The Emperor Norton. He was a longtime fixture in the San Francisco underground, including the San Francisco Cacophony Society and the Haight-Ashbury Preservation Society.
As a member of the Cacophony Society, Peter (aka Pierre, La Marquis de Gateau and Dwayne Neutron), lead several memorable pranks such as Bastille Day's "Let Them Eat Cake," the BART lounge car, and a mock protest against the movie Fantasia.
Upon the death of his father in 2011, Peter moved to Albuquerque to be first companion and then caregiver for his mother until her death in 2020. He remained in the family home until his own death.
Peter is survived by his brothers, David Doty of Ellicott City, MD, and Ted Doty of Parrish, FL; his nieces and nephews (Richard, Ian, Dennis, Evelina, and Julie), and a grandniece (Alana Rosen); and countless friends from Maine, California, and places in between.
Peter's life will be celebrated, together with his mother's, in Albuquerque on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the First Congregational United Church of Christ at 2801 Lomas Blvd NE (to be livestreamed on YouTube channel @firstcongregationalchurchu8763), in San Francisco on Sunday, May 21, 2023, in Golden Gate Park (details at the Peter S. Doty Memorial Group page on FaceBook), and in Orono, Maine, in on Sunday, June 4, 2023 in the Buchanan Alumni House on the campus of the University of Maine, 160 College Ave, Orono, ME.(see the FaceBook page).
