Peggy Hunnicutt

Long-time Albuquerque resident Peggy Hunnicutt, 96, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Amaran Senior Living after a short illness. She was born Peggy Anne Brown on June 12, 1928 in Raleigh, NC to Mr. and Mrs. James Archie Brown. She was the last surviving member of her family which included sisters Odette Bowling and Lucille Crawford and a brother, Lester Brown. Her husband, Ward Hunnicutt, a former executive at Sandia National Labs and a member of the AMAFCA board, passed away in 2012. 

Peggy is survived by two sons, Robert Ward Hunnicutt (Joyce) of Washington, IL and John Carl Hunnicutt (Elise) of Rye, NH. She also has a niece, Carolyn Edwards of Myrtle Beach, SC and three nephews; Claude Crawford of Punta Gorda, FL, Charles Brown and David Brown of Raleigh, NC.

Peggy and Ward, shortly after they married in 1949, moved to Albuquerque from North Carolina in order to find a better climate for her chronic bronchial asthma. She took advantage of her degree from Peace College to land a job as a legal secretary at the Rodey Law Firm. She became involved in a variety of civic and philanthropic organizations. For many years she was a senior officer on the board of the NM Federation of Women's Clubs. She also was active as a volunteer for the Albuquerque Assistance League, the Cosmopolitan Woman's Club and Chapter V of P.E.O. She was also an long-time member of Central United Methodist Church.

During pauses in her volunteer work, she was an avid golfer at Paradise Hills and Tanoan Country Clubs and was a serious bridge player. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to visit dozens of countries over the years.

Viewing for Mrs. Hunnicutt will be held at FRENCH-Wyoming on March 18, 2025 from 3:00-5:00 PM followed by a service at the same location on March 19, 2025 at 10:00 AM. She will then be laid to rest next to her husband at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
