Paul Joseph Roney Sr., a native of Albuquerque, NM, at 90 years old, returned home to our Lord and Savior Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at 5:15 a.m. Paul suffered an abrupt aortic aneurysm sometime before the week of Thanksgiving. After the emergency surgery, we all felt it was a miraculous success due to his rapid and astonishing recovery. However, to our dismay, Paul relapsed on Thanksgiving evening and decided to not seek further treatment and allow nature to take its course.
Paul lived his life by two deeply held mantras: “We’re all in this together” and what he called the definition of Love; “The power to see, and the willingness to fulfill the needs of others without return.” Paul lived these mantras out starting back in his teenage years when he would drive the Catholic Priests around to perform their blessings and duties, to later in his service in the US Army, and then in his compassionate way of dealing with tenants unable to pay rent; and most recently with volunteering at “The Pantry” receiving, organizing, and delivering food for Albuquerque’s needy. Paul selflessly devoted a great deal of his time, energy, and money to Albuquerque. He served over 30 years with Gas Company of NM then PNM, his many rental units, his continual volunteering since his teenage years. He served and helped the residents of NM in need, just as his father had. Paul is truly loved and adored by all who had fallen prey to his contagious smile was surrounded by family and friends every moment of his hospital stay.
Paul, a second-generation Albuquerque-ian, is preceded in death by his father, Edward Milton Roney. Edward was proclaimed “Good Samaritan” by Albuquerque Journal February 19, 1974 and “Pioneer Grocer,” by the Albuquerque Journal.
Paul came from a large family of 14 children. His mother, Josephine Roney, 1975, had four children Paul, LuAnne, Florence, and JoJo. The other children were from Milton Edwards’ first wife, Dola. Paul was raised in a deeply spiritual family. Paul’s three sisters, Lucia Ann, Florence Elizabeth, and Josephine Marie “JoJo” all answered to the Lord’s calling and dedicated their lives as Nuns. Paul’s love of the Lord, and his deep belief of God the Father, and the grace he received from our Lord and Savior was paramount in all of his decisions and actions. His life was an open book to all who would take the time and listen. He never complained and attributed all to “The Man Upstairs.”
Paul was married to Gloria Roney and together they had four children: Rita Marie, Linda Ann, Paul Joseph Roney Jr, and Randall Milton, all of Albuquerque, NM. Paul has left a giant void for Albuquerque and an even greater loss for his family, whom he put second only to his love of God. Paul was grateful for Helen Weil, his longtime love, companion, and travel partner. He will be deeply missed by all.
