Paul E. Hurd, 89, passed away on December 11, 2022. He was born September 15, 1933, in Greensburg, PA, the middle child of seven, and grew up in White Plains, NY. After graduating from high school, Paul enlisted in the Army, and considered his time of service to be a defining period in his life. He was extremely proud to be a US Army Veteran and credited the self-confidence and discipline he gained from his Army experience, along with the GI Bill of Rights, for allowing him to attend and graduate from Iona College. Life eventually brought him to a long career as a purchasing agent for Shell Oil in New Jersey, where he met the love of his life, Barbara, and embraced her two daughters as his own. After getting married, their jobs took them to Marietta, GA, where they lived for 33 years before moving to Albuquerque in 2016. Until Alzheimer's finally robbed Paul of his independence, their retirement years were filled with trips around the country visiting family, and memorable vacations to Alaska and Hawaii.
Paul is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara Hurd; stepdaughters Lisa Frankland (Aaron) and Sharon Layeski (Gene); sons Stephen Hurd and Peter Hurd; grandchildren William Frankland (Jasmine), Meghan Frankland, Emily Layeski, and Connor Layeski; one great-granddaughter, Lyria; siblings Donald, Barbara, and Cathy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Mary Hurd; and siblings Mary, Claude, and Zorah.
The family thanks Paul's care team from Harmony Home Health & Hospice; along with Jacquie, Sue Ann, Kathleen, and other caring staff members at the Watermark at Cherry Hills for all their support during his final months.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, January 24th at 10am at John XXIII Catholic Community, 4831 Tramway Ridge Dr. NE, with interment to follow at 1 pm at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
