Pablo Emilio Lucero

November 21, 1927 — April 19, 2021

Pablo Emilio Lucero, 93, passed away April 19, 2021 in Albuquerque, NM. Pablo was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary Grace C. Lucero, and he is survived by his son, Orlando Lucero, and daughter-in-law, BJ Jones; granddaughter, Estrella M. Lucero; sister, Emilia Gallegos; and many friends and family. Born in Ojo Caliente, NM, to Celestino and Fulgencia Lucero, Pablo and his four siblings grew up on a small farm in Ojo. In high school, Pablo, who stood at 5'4", was a starting member of the basketball team.

After high school, Pablo enlisted in the Army, where he served for four years, and his work included serving as a radio operator on bombers. During the Korean War, he was called up from the reserves and joined the Air Force, which he considered to be his branch of service. After his second tour of duty, he attended St. Joseph's College in Albuquerque and then went to work for the Atomic Energy Commission, now the Department of Energy. After their marriage in 1956, Pablo and Grace lived in Albuquerque, and they moved to Los Alamos in the mid-60s. Pablo retired from the Department of Energy in the mid-70s and began a second career at the Los Alamos National Labs, from which he retired in the mid-80s. Pablo and Grace moved back to Ojo Caliente to care for Grace's elderly mother, where Pablo was as loving and supportive as a son could be. Upon the birth of their only grandchild in the 90s, Pablo and Grace returned to Albuquerque, where they enjoyed life as doting grandparents.

Pablo and Grace were active and faithful members of The Shrine of St. Bernadette Parish, where Pablo served as an usher and as a member of the Spanish Choir. Pablo was also active with the Knights of Columbus Council #16574. Pablo was a gentle soul - kind, patient and loving, with a mischievous sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. Pablo strived hard for his family and believed in a good education, even though he did not complete college himself. He encouraged his son to seek the best education and to reach beyond his roots, and his legacy now includes a Stanford lawyer son and a soon to be Yale lawyer granddaughter.

In their later years Pablo and Grace enjoyed traveling across the Southwest (but never by plane) to visit friends and family. While the passage of time ultimately dimmed Pablo's memory, he never forgot his family nor who he was, and he never lost that twinkle in his eye. He always loved to dance, and even as he became more infirm, he'd let go of his cane and dance with the other residents and staff at Montebello until almost the end. At his advanced age he even discovered a talent for painting that will remain one of our most treasured memories. Our family wishes to thank the staff at Montebello Assisted Living for their loving care of dad for over four years, and the staff with Ambercare Hospice for making his final weeks comfortable and serene.

A Visitation for Pablo will be held at French-Wyoming on Tuesday, April 27, from 4-5p.m. Due to COVID restrictions attendance is limited, we kindly ask to RSVP to for the visitation under the services below. Pablo will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery together with his beloved Grace.
