Oscar Loya

Oscar Loya, age 70, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sylvia and his two sons, Ramon, age 42 and Daniel age 37.

Oscar served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1973. After his service, Oscar joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in 1978 and completed the Inside Journeyman Wireman Apprenticeship in 1982 in Eureka, Ca. He worked throughout the Western United States during his career and retired from the IBEW Local 611 in 2012. Oscar is survived by his grandchildren whom he helped care for during their infancy. He is remembered by his grandsons as “Papa,” as always sharing his sweet treats and pushing them on the swing. His grandaughter remembers him picking her up from school, going out to lunch together and picking vegetables from their garden.

Oscar loved traveling with Sylvia, and they made many memories driving throughout the country, camping, visiting family and friends and taking their Jeep off roading. Oscar also enjoyed fishing, and during their travels you could often find him sitting near a lake or stream with Sylvia by his side.

Oscar is survived by five siblings, Mario, Jose Luis, Rosa, Norma, and Ninfa. He maintained a close relationship with his siblings and always made time to visit them and attend family events.

Oscar was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2015 and with Lung Cancer in 2020. He had a fighting spirit and despite his diagnosis spent as much time as he could making memories with his family and fighting to stay healthy. The loss of Oscar is felt by many and the family invites those who want to pay their respect to attend his funeral. Services will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Rio Rancho. At the request of the family, memorial contributions should be made to a Cancer Organization of your choosing.
