Norman J. Elliott, 93, Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully at Coronado Villa Retirement Resort on November 8, 2018, with his loving wife, Aida, by his side. Norman was born June 19, 1925, to Ivan A. Elliott and Malen (Stinson) Elliott in their home in Carmi, Illinois. He graduated from Carmi High School in 1943 then immediately joined the U.S Army Air Force as a part of his call to defend America. After the war ended Norm served in the Reserves while attending college at the University of Illinois on the GI Bill. He graduated with both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering. After moving to Albuquerque in 1952, Noman went to work for Sandia Laboratories as an electrical engineer. During his time there he was able to work for a time at the Nevada Proving Ground when certain nuclear tests were being conducted. Norman met the love of his life, Aida Cortinas, and they were married on June 17, 1966. During their 52 years of marriage Norman and Aida had many hobbies in common which kept them both active long after they both retired in 1990 at age 65.
Norman was a member of the National Ski Patrol and was often found on the slopes of Sandia Peak Ski Resort. In the early 1960’s he built a log cabin with his best friend, Bob Seavey, in the Jemez Mountain, near Cuba, NM. His hobbies included photography and developing his own pictures, fixing watches, making his own ammunition for hunting and built model airplanes that he flew in competitions. Norman hunted all over New Mexico with his wife and friends and fished not only in New Mexico but in Alaska and Canada. In his later life he was able to travel to England, Spain and Germany. Norman’s favorite trips were seeing the Polar Bears in Alaska and a fishing trip to Alaska with his elder brother.
Norman was a longtime member of his hometown church, First United Presbyterian Church, Carmi, IL.
Norman is survived by his wife Aida; step daughter, Mary Kathryn Mason, Albuquerque; grandson, Iain Mason, Roswell; three nieces: Cynthia Elliott, Hays, KS, Rebecca Griffin, Loveland, OH, and Marjorie Martin, Henderson, NV. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ivan A Elliott and Malen Stinson Elliott; his elder brother, Ivan A Elliott, Jr. and sister-in-law, Laralynn Elliott.
Graveside Serevices will be held on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 11:15 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery where the flag of the United States is proudly flown. The orderliness of the cemetery commemorates his life.
