Norma Jean (Nicholas) Myers

Norma Jean (Nickie) Nicholas Myers was born Tuesday, October 20, 1923, in Brazil, Indiana, and died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, September 17, 2022, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was the oldest of three children born to the late Morris Winfield Nicholas and Norma Gertrude Rowland Nicholas. In addition to her parents, Norma was preceded in death by husband Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert (Bob) Evan Myers, daughter Cassandra Myers-Warner, son-in-law James K. Luce, son-in-law JohnPatrick Morrison, sister and brother-in-law Patricia Ann (Richard) Nicholas Loomis, brother and sister-in-law Morris W. (Patricia) Nicholas, Jr., brother-in-law Richard R. Blurton, nephews Steven Nicholas and Thomas Nicholas, and great-nephew Jeremy Konrad-Nicholas. One month shy of her 99th birthday, Norma was the last of her cousins to die.

She is survived by daughters Cynthia Jean (Peter K. Morrison) Myers-Morrison and Candace Ann Myers, son-in-law Joe W. Warner, sister-in-law Claire Myers Blurton, granddaughter Deidre Ann (Kathy Jo Shambaugh) Morrison, nephews Mark Loomis and David (Mary) Blurton, niece Julie Nicholas Robillard, step-grandchildren Holly Luce Passarelli, Laura (Eric) Luce Marston, Brad (Denise) Warner, Stacey (Steve) Warner Swanson, Douglas Luce, Gregory (Sandra) Luce, great-granddaughter Victoria Erynn (Robert) Schaefer Fairchild, step-great-grandchildren Shannon (Mike) Warner Ribeiro, Danielle Luce, Jeremy (Alisa) Burnett, Valerie (Stephen) Swanson Chilcote, Noah Luce, Tara Brewster, Bailey Luce, Summer Marston, Scott Warner, Connor Luce, Santiago Luce, and Ariana Luce, great-nephews Jonathan (Siying) Nicholas, Michael (Anne) Nicholas, and Zachary (Lee) Reeves-Blurton, great-nieces Hannah Nicholas Vinnedge, Emily Blurton, and Sara Nicholas Deais, along with a whole generation of great-great's, a few great-great-great's, and many other extended family members, Montebello staff members, and friends, including former 'daughter-in-law' Debbie Fowler, former grandson-in-law Perry Schaefer, and half-sister Liz Klenzman.

Norma spent her early years in the Midwest, her father a rising accountant in a growing oil company. Early in the 1930's, the family moved to Montana, where Norma graduated from Billings High School in 1941. The rest of her family having moved back to the Midwest, Norma enrolled at Bowling Green College in Ohio. In 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, Bob, who was then stationed in Virginia as an Army Air Corps pilot.
Post-World War II, the couple returned to Montana and enrolled at Montana State University, graduating together in 1949 - Norma with a degree in Home Economics and a toddler (first-born daughter, Cindy). In the following year, Candy arrived, and Bob was called back to the Air Force to pilot bombers in Korea. Cassie was born a few years later, and Norma embraced the role of Air Force officer's wife, moving frequently as Bob was transferred.
Over Norma's lifetime, she lived 31 different places. She nurtured her daughters' interests with her volunteerism as a Girl Scout leader, a swim-team mom, and an active school booster. A skilled seamstress, she worked tirelessly to clothe herself and her daughters. Over the years, Norma worked as an elementary teacher, social worker, and buyer and associate for Cooper's Western Wear stores.

In the 1970's, she and Bob retired in Albuquerque's North Valley, with a prodigious backyard garden and a beloved German Shepherd/Saint Bernard, Sam. Bob and Norma traveled widely, not only road-tripping to family events and school reunions all over North America, but also touring the world by sea and sky, traversing six continents.

Norma and Bob had more time to devote to their favorite pastimes - bridge and genealogy - when they downsized to the Northeast Heights. After Bob's death in 1999, Norma continued her regular card games, research with the Albuquerque Genealogical Society, and acquisition of membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Norma chose to move to The Montebello when she learned that macular degeneration would soon limit her driving. There she enjoyed many friendships, the wonderful food, and frequent visits from family and friends.
A memorial to her life will be held October 2, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at FRENCH-Wyoming. Interment will occur at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Charles Dibrell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the Albuquerque Genealogical Society would be appreciated.
