MALLES, NORA M.
Age 102, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, September 3, 2012. She is survived by her son, Reece Malles and wife, Leslie Ann of Gordon, NE; and daughter, Frankie Mae Hitson of Albuquerque, NM. Nora was preceded in death by her husband, John and her parents. Nora (Chiole) Malles was born in Silverton, CO to Frank and Valentina Chiole. She was their only child. Nora started school in Telluride, CO but finished elementary grades at Breen in a rural one room school house. She attended 'old' Fort Lewis boarding high school for four years. The facility became a junior college which Nora attended. She subsequently started teaching elementary school on the Fort Lewis Mesa. She received her degree in elementary education when Fort Lewis college became a full four year institution. Nora taught 31 years in LaPlata county at various schools on the Fort Lewis Mesa. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a honorary teachers sorority. Nora loved teaching and working with her pupils. She enjoyed her young years on a farm. Nora entered all the community activities. She loved to dance, she and John danced well into their 90's. In 1934, Nora married John Malles of Durango, CO. He worked in the family business, Malles Transfer. When the business closed in 1942, the family moved to Breen where they ranched. Two children were born to Nora and John, daughter, Frankie Mae and son, Reece. In 1971 after 31 years of teaching, she retired. They also sold the ranch. They moved to Cortez, CO and from there they traveled throughout the country and Mexico by RV. In 1982, they moved to T or C, where they could dance five nights a week. They also continued to RV. In 2004, they moved to Albuquerque, NM. They celebrated their 72 years of marriage before John passed away in 2007. Graveside Services will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012, 1:00 pm at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango, CO.
