Noami Romero Slater was born on March 5, 1940, to the late Alex Romero
Sr., and Florinda Romero in Pojoaque, NM and died unexpectedly on July
26, 2024, in Albuquerque, NM. She was a devoted wife to Bob Slater for
60 years; a loving mother to Julie Slater Amato (Ron) and Patrick Slater
(Lynn Marie Rusaw); a caring grandmother to Matthew, Adam, Jovanna,
Estevan, Antonio, and Melia (great-granddaughter); a treasured sister to
Toni Montoya (Ivan), Phillip Romero (Josephine), the late Alex Romero Jr.
(surviving wife Jane), Delphina (Tony),and Connie Garcia (Raymond); and
sister-in-law to Steve Slater (Teresa); a dear aunt to numerous nieces and
nephews; a cherished friend to many; and an accomplished artist whose
paintings hang in collections worldwide.
Noami was born and raised in the beautiful Pojoaque Valley, attended
Pojoaque High School, Draughon's Business College in Albuquerque, and
studied watercolor and oil painting with Howard Wexler, Siegfried Hahn, J. Dietrich,
and Todd Tibbals. Noami met her husband and love of her life, Bob Slater,
on an arranged "blind" date where both showed up not wearing their
glasses. They were later married on October 5, 1963. Bob and Noami had
2 children, Julie and Patrick, and moved between New Mexico and Texas
following Bob's employment with the Department of Energy.
Most recently, Noami lived with Bob in Albuquerque for 42 years. During
this time, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, matriarch to a
large extended family, and friend. Noami excelled as an artist and sold her
paintings at private showings and many local art shows including the
Spanish Market in Santa Fe. Making the most beautiful, beaded earrings
and bracelets was a passion of hers in later life. She was always very
generous with family and friends and shared these special jewelry
creations with them.
Noami and Bob hosted many parties, holiday celebrations, and family
gatherings at their house over the years. Noami's cooking was
phenomenal. Her homemade Christmas tamales and empanaditas,
tortillas, green chile sauce, biscochitos, and frosted sugar cookies were
family favorites. She also loved time spent with neighborhood friends at
impromptu "happy hours" to share a nice glass of wine.
Noami was a member of the Risen Savior Catholic Church since its
inception. She assisted her husband Bob who was on the original Church
Building Committee and participated in the Sojourners women's group and
the Women's Guild.
Noami Romero Slater touched the lives of so many and will be dearly
missed. Services will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, with a Rosary
recited at 9:00am followed by the Funeral Mass at 9:30am at Risen Savior
