Nick Paul Jannakos, age 91 of Albuquerque, passed away Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023. He was born in East St. Louis, Illinois on Sept. 21, 1932. From 1952-1954, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Washington D.C. during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1961.
In 1957, Mr. Jannakos received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Parks College of St. Louis University in Aeronautical Engineering. After accepting a job offer from Martin Marietta in 1959, Mr. Jannakos moved his family to Golden, Colorado where he lived for the next 45 years. He received his Professional Engineer (PE) license from the State of Colorado in 1966. During his career as an engineer, he also worked for Coors Brewery, Ball Metal Container Group, Sterns-Roger Engineering and Rockwell Aerospace. Mr. Jannakos was a member of the Executive Committee of the Colorado Environmental Commission from 1970 to 1971 under Governor John A. Love.
In October of 1993, Mr. Jannakos was ordained to the Orthodox Church in America's holy diaconate by Bishop Tikhon of San Francisco, and he served as a church deacon at St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church in Littleton, CO until 2005, when he and his wife moved to Albuquerque. He then served as a deacon at All Saints of North America Orthodox Church in Albuquerque under Fr. George Sondergaard and Fr. Nikolay Miletkov.
He was a loving husband to his wife Elizabeth (Sharos) Jannakos for 69 years; loving brother to Chona (Jannakos) and Ted Millas, Gregory and Sue Jannakos, and George and Patricia Anastas; loving father to the Archpriest Paul and Protinica Michelle (Julylia) Jannakos, Mark and Jenifer (Womack) Jannakos, and Mary Beth (Jannakos) and Daniel Chumney; loving grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, and many dear cousins, nephews and nieces.
Mr. Jannakos enjoyed hiking in the Rocky Mountains with his family and friends, and he was an avid reader of Orthodox Christian theology.
Funeral services are scheduled at All Saints of North America Orthodox Church, 10440 4th Street NW, Albuquerque, and are as follows:
Tuesday, Nov. 28, 4-6 pm: Visitation
Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6:00 pm: Funeral Service
Wednesday, Nov. 29, 9:30am: Divine Liturgy, followed by a potluck luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints of North America Building Fund or to the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC).
