Nathaniel Davies Joiner Jr.

d. April 25, 2017

Nathaniel Davis Joiner Jr. went to join his wife, Trena Therese Marsh-Joiner April 25, 2017. He lived seven decades serving his country, family, community and above all else, God.

Joiner, 71, was born February 9, 1946 in Tallulah, Louisiana. He was a true southern gentleman. He believed in traditional values,  such as, seeing someone in need and meeting the need in whatever way he was able with no expectation of compensation in return,  respecting your elders, keeping your word and being on time. Lateness was one of his pet peeves. Family jokes that Joiner would say “If you are five minutes early, you are late.”

Joiner was an educator, including an administrator, for 32 years before he retired from Albuquerque Public Schools in 2007. He was an inspiration to many of his students, who remembered him years after leaving his classroom. Joiner was an artist at heart and loved making pottery and jewelry. He used to say that one of his greatest joys was when a piece of clay told him what it wanted to become. He also enjoyed fishing and making his own wine, which he shared with family and friends.

Joiner’s most recognizable trait was his infectious smile. He was rarely seen without it, even when he was ill. Joiner, a true educator, was always focused on setting goals. His signature saying was “See it through,” which also happens to be the name of his favorite poem.

Joiner taught his children and grandchildren to never be afraid, forgive quickly, love passionately and that laughter could cure almost any ailment.

Nathaniel was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Davis Sr. and Dolly Delores Rounds Joiner; and grandson, Xavier Kingston.

He is survived by his children, Christine, Alvin (Krista), and Jeanette (Mario); his grandchildren, Anastacia, Tremayne, Gatlyn, Katrina (Timithy), Marielle, Marianne, Jeffery, Jeric, and Jehmar. He had a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as several students he cared for like family. Nathaniel is survived by his sister, Flora (Robert) and brother, John (Carolyn). His caregivers Mable (George), Monica (Lee), and friends and colleagues that cherished him like family.
