Narcille Couvillion Lorio, 88 years old, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, peacefully passed away of Alzheimer's Disease on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The family expresses sincere thanks to the caregivers at Brookdale Clare Bridge Memory Care Center for their excellent care for the last 3 years.
She was born on Wednesday, April 8, 1936, in Simmesport, LA, to Jervais and Leontine Couvillion. She was the youngest of 12: Ferdinand, Isabel, Esla Lemoine, Eleanor Gremillion, Bernice Gremillion, Marion (Mac), Aaron, Warren, Jervais (J.F.), Gaston, Irvin, and Narcille. Aaron, JF, and Warren lived and farmed in Simmesport for many years.
Narcille married James Carl Lorio, of Baton Rouge, LA, on Saturday, July 6, 1957, just after graduating from Our Lady of the Like Nursing school. Together, Jim and Narcille built their family, living most of their life in Central, LA. They raised three children and took frequent camping vacations together. As they were avid Square Dancers too, their camping trips were often with Square Dance clubs. They also supported all three children in their music and academic endeavors and created a legacy for their lives. Jim Lorio died in August 2005. Several years later, Narcille moved to be with her children in Albuquerque, NM.
Her family remembers Narcille for her many years in nursing, her strong organizational skills, her phenomenal recipes and cooking skills, and her creation of beautiful quilts. She touched many people and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Judith Lorio White, John Forest Lorio, and Anita Lorio Schreiber, all of whom graduated from LSU and participated in Tiger Band. Her grandchildren are Jessica Schreiber Dominguez Holquin, Allyson Schreiber, James White, and Julianne White. Jessica and Nicholas Dominguez Holquin have one daughter Elena. She had numerous beloved nieces and nephews as well as other cherished relatives and friends.
Narcille also left a legacy of working in Medical Research. She began in the LSU Oncology center and worked for years with research protocols. Dr. Judy White has been in general clinical research 25 years, working on medicine, vaccine, and Alzheimer's clinical trials. Dr. Allyson Schreiber did research during her undergraduate years at LSU and now is in a neonatal fellowship doing research. Dr. Julianne White, DVM, has been involved in equine research, both in Large Animal Internal Medicine Residency and as assistant professor at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. James (JD) has been successful as a computer software engineer, working first in Silicon Valley and then with other startup companies working in research and development of pharmaceuticals for cancer and rare diseases.
Jessica shares her grandmother's attributes and was able to create FabScrap, a Non-profit based in Brooklyn, New York, which specializes in textile recycling and endeavors to end commercial textile "waste" and maximize the value of unused fabric. As of the 2023 Annual Report, FabScrap has diverted 1,641,981 lbs. of fabric from landfill since its launch in 2016.
