Nan C. Hamner, 80, joined Jay and the angels on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. She was born Wednesday, December 30, 1942, to Ray and Alberta Corkran. She grew up in Albuquerque, attending Jefferson Junior High, Highland High School, and the University of New Mexico.
Shortly after graduating from UNM she began her teaching career, first at Navajo Elementary and later at Gov. Bent Elementary. Along the way she met and married her fellow teacher and the love of her life, Jay Hamner. Together they taught hundreds of Albuquerque children during their long careers. And what a team they made! They delighted in creating rich learning environments and unique teaching tools for their lucky students. Their rooms were beautiful and inviting, the atmospheres warm and calm. Although they had no children of their own, their enthusiasm helped each child in their classes to feel special and develop a love of learning.
The children in Nan's classes were not the only recipients of her unconditional love and respect. Throughout her life she extended her gifts of empathy and kindness to friends and family. After her retirement she volunteered many hours at Animal Humane New Mexico, lavishing the creatures there with her special brand of affection.
Nan is survived by her sister, Rajeane Jack; two nieces, Kristy Waldraff (Rick) and Kara Lea Nixon (Steve); and her nephew, Jim Jack (Kim); as well as several great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved Jay.
Memorial gifts may be made to Animal Humane New Mexico, 615 Virginia St. SE., Albuquerque, NM 87108.
