Milton Jerome Melliger (Milt or Mel), age 85, died after a short battle with throat cancer, on November 6, 2017, in Albuquerque, NM.
Milt is survived by his beloved dog, Pal; his siblings and spouses, Carroll and Doris Melliger and their children and families and Margaret and Richard Nosal and their children and families of Columbus, NE; numerous nieces and nephews including John and Shanon Clemons of Albuquerque, NM, Patty and Carlos Sandoval of Crete, NE, Curt Melliger of Durango, CO, Deb Getchell of Beaverton, OR, and Criag Melliger of Columbus, NE. He is preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Barbara Melliger, sister, Doris Clemons, parents, Albert and Pauline (Merz) Melliger, sister, Paula Mae Melliger, and brother, Joseph Melliger.
Milt was born on May 23, 1932 in Columbus, NE to parents Albert Melliger and Pauline (Merz) Melliger and grew up on a farm. Milt served in the Navy from April 21, 1952 – April 11, 1956 during the Korean War. After serving in the Navy, he graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and worked for the Associates Financial Services for 30 years when he retired in Albuquerque, NM with his dog, Pal.
Milt was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker fan all of his lifetime, and is well remembered wearing his red Husker clothes every Saturday during fall football season while watching the Huskers play.
He was an avid gardener and grew and tended many gardens at his home throughout his lifetime. He was proud to show off his garden and share the produce with anyone who wanted some.
Friends and family may visit Wednesday, November 8, 2017, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at FRENCH – Wyoming. Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m., and a Prayer Vigil will follow at 7:00 p.m., also at FRENCH – Wyoming. Interment will take place Thursday, November 9, 2017, 9:45 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
