[A person wearing a red and white teddy bear Description automatically generated] Milo G. Myers passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2020 at the age of 78. Milo was born to Cecil and Juneidabeth Myers in Des Arc, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife Ellen Myers, daughter and son-in-law Sam and David Sims, grandchildren Emily and Jason Sims, brother William Myers, dear friend Pat Kneen and many, many other family and friends who truly adored him. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Margaret Myers.
Milo grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas and was graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Chemical Engineering and commissioned into the United States Air Force in 1964. He spent a career as a Bio Environmental Engineer (BEE) working to clean up some of the Air Force’s most hazardous waste sites. Over his Air Force career he was stationed at Travis Air Force Base, California, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, Athenai Airport, Greece, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, Clark Air Base, Republic of the Philippines, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico and McClellan Air Force Base, California. He met his wife Ellen while both were stationed with the Air Force in Athens, Greece where they were married, and Sam was born. As a family they traveled the world to various stations until his retirement in the grade of LtCol in 1984. The family settled in Albuquerque and Milo began a 17-year second career with the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department. While at the city, he developed the Household Hazardous Waste Collection program. This program was one of the first of its kind in the nation and continues to this day. https://www.cabq.gov/solidwaste/household-hazardous-waste. Upon retirement from the city in 2002 Milo became a volunteer docent at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History and worked a weekly shift until recently. Volunteering at the museum and meeting visitors from all over the world kept him engaged. He even enjoyed getting up before dawn a couple of times a year to serve as a tour guide on the Museum tours of the Trinity Site.
Milo and Ellen lived at La Vida Llena Retirement Community since 2007 where they enjoyed the full life and made many friends. He was affectionately known as “the mayor” because of how active he was in the community and how he was always willing to lend a hand. Every year he would dress up as Santa for multiple seasonal community events and was known to emcee events in Carter Hall. Milo and Ellen enjoyed taking small cruise ship tours to Alaska, Canada, Japan, the Panama Canal and Europe before the effects of dementia made it impossible for Ellen to travel. Having Sam, David, Emily and Jason living close by, they were often seen at various school, tennis, baseball and band events.
