Michael Alan Stark, 69, went to his rest on Friday, November 20, 2015 in Albuquerque after a lengthy illness.
Born November 17, 1946 in Tacoma, WA, Mike grew up living all around the United States as a "military brat," graduating from Gwynn Park Senior High School in Brandywine, MD and attending the University of Maryland at College Park before moving with his family to Albuquerque in 1965.
He enlisted the next year in the US Air Force and served for four years, including a tour in Southeast Asia. After his military service he resumed his studies, earning a Geology degree in 1977 and an Executive MBA in 1997 from the University of New Mexico.
Mike's career was widely varied, from electronics and machining to work in high-energy physics to broadcast radio and television engineering, and he was retired from Sandia National Laboratories and from UNM. He volunteered with local radio emergency and search-and-rescue services, the regional Science and Engineering Fairs, the City of Albuquerque Open Space division and at Popejoy Hall.
His hobbies included amateur radio, photography, woodworking, gunsmithing, collecting antique tools, exotic birds, ballooning, playing the flute, four-wheeling, and camping.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Louis K. and Alice A. Stark. He is survived by his brothers, Jon Stark of San Jose, CA and Lee Stark of Albuquerque; his sisters, Pat Eads and Beth Stark-Hoeke of Albuquerque and Jo Stark of Carbondale, CO; his former spouse, Lori Floyd of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Thomas of Canterbury, 425 University Blvd. NE. Visitation for Mike will be on Monday, November 30, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. Committal will take place on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 11:15 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, www. theaftd.org or to the charity of your choice.
