Melvin Gerald Chalem

December 2, 1923 — August 14, 2021

Melvin Gerald Chalem, age 97, passed away on August 14, 2021. He was born on December 2, 1923 to Max and Clara Chalem in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of Phi Epsilon Pi Fraternity and DePaul University. Mel spent his business career in Advertising Sales and was a member of the Chicago Advertising Club. He retired as Midwest Manager for House and Garden Magazine.

Mel was active in his sons and step-daughters activities and interests in their youth, spending countless hours in their support. He continued to show the same kind of love, support, and interest in his adult children and grandchildren. He loved sports. Throughout his life he enjoyed horseback riding, skiing at Aspen, sailing on Lake Michigan, and gold. Mel was a "people person" who enjoyed the art of conversation.

Mel and Natalie retired to Albuquerque, New Mexico where they made many good friends. Together they enjoyed extensive travel around the world, symphony concerts, opera, and playing bridge.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Florence Schlesinger. He is survived by his loving wife, Natalie; his children, Dean (Janie), Jeremy (Mary); step-daughter, Elizabeth Bekos (Jeffrey); and grandchildren, Matthew, Margaret, Nellie Rose, John, Nicholas, Brenden, Hailey; and niece, Morley Schlesinger.

A private family service will be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy the family would welcome donations to a charity or organization of one's choice.
