Melissa Warren, 37, passed away quietly in her sleep in her home in Rio Rancho, NM on Friday, January 15, 2016.
Melissa's life was characterized by her passion for serving God with her entire life and by how naturally she showed love to the people around her, how she made everyone feel at home in her presence - from her children, to her friends, to random encounters in line at Albertson's. She gave everything she had to everyone who had a need, spending hours on the phone with a friend in a relationship crisis, driving across town at a moment's notice to hold the hand of a sick friend, and taking four children who needed a mom into her home, to name just a few examples. The stories of how she touched nearly everyone she ever met are endless.
For the past several years, Melissa's primary focus has been on being a mom to her children and preparing for her wedding, which was scheduled for April of this year. Prior to this chapter in her life, she proudly and tirelessly served our country in the United States Coast Guard, achieving the rank of Chief before retiring in 2014.
Melissa was creative, passionate, and constantly ambitious, decorating her home, creating beautiful jewelry, and cooking up family favorites and new, experimental recipes in the kitchen. She loved to use her creative talents to entertain, give unique and thoughtful gifts, and bond with her children. She also loved animals, keeping her home hopping with dogs, cats, birds, a tortoise, a rat, fish and a few chickens.
Melissa is survived by two grandparents, Joe Warren and Mona Roseland; her parents, Mark and Dawne Warren; her brother, Ben Roderick; her fiancé, Rob Elgersma; two bonus-kids-to-be, Katherine and Aaron Elgersma; and four children, Tyler, Grace, Aiden, and Savannah.
Services will be held Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, 1004 24th Street SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124. Family and friends may begin visiting at 10:00 a.m. Melissa's remains will be memorialized at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM in a private ceremony on a later date.
