Mary Lou (Serrano) Sanchez

February 4, 1934 — October 6, 2022

Mary Lou Serrano Sanchez passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at the age of 88 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mary Lou was born and raised in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, and she was a graduate of Santa Rosa High School.

She worked at the Club Café and then at the office of the school superintendent where she met her late husband, Joe Robert Sanchez, a teacher for the district. They made their home in Santa Rosa until Joe Robert was offered a position as principal of West Las Vegas High School in the early 1970s. They resided in Las Vegas, New Mexico, until they moved to Albuquerque in 2007. Mary Lou was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She had a kind and caring demeanor, and she loved to laugh and be silly when spending time with family.

Mary Lou is preceded in death by her parents, Luciano and Mary Serrano; her husband, Joe Robert Sanchez; her son, Phillip J. Sanchez; and her sister, Marie Ozila Serrano Ortega. She is survived by her daughter, Marga Sanchez of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her daughter-in-law, Martha Sanchez of Menlo Park, California; and her two grandchildren, Nathan and Erin Sanchez of Menlo Park, California. Mary Lou is also survived by her brother Eddie Serrano and wife Camilla of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and her sisters Loretta Serrano Campos of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, and Pamela Serrano McCue of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She leaves behind her in-laws, Eric M. Ortega, Jose G. Sanchez and wife Elizabeth, Max R. Sanchez and wife Annadelle, Vivian Sanchez, Adeline Chavez, Patricia Sanchez, Petra Sanchez, and Maria Teresa Sanchez. Mary Lou will be missed by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who knew her by Auntie Lou.

Interment will be Friday, October 28, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
