Mary Lou Burke, 74, beloved grandmother and sister, was called to her eternal resting place on May 24, 2017. She entered this world on May 21, 1943 in Scottsbluff, NE, born to Pedro and Consuelo Leyva.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Stephanie Romero; great-grandchildren, Dominic, Anjelia, Alexia and Aylena, and her brothers, Larry and Pete.
Mary Lou was a retired APS special education teacher. She touched so many lives throughout the Special Olympics community. She was also instrumental in helping adults with disabilities. Mary Lou received the ARC of New Mexico Community Service Award in 2016. She was so happy and honored that she was nominated for the award. She will truly be missed.
A Rosary will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Therese Little Flower Church, 300 Mildred Avenue NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107. A Mass will be held Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Therese Little Flower Church. The reception will follow the Mass. It will be held at the Our Lady of Guadalupe hall if the renovation is complete. Further details will be announced at the service.
