Mary Lynn Whitten, 93, of Albuquerque, NM left this life to be with Jesus on October 23, 2023. She was married to William (Bill) Newton Whitten Jr. in 1953. She is survived by her son, William David Whitten, daughter-in-law Pamela Jill Whitten, sister Alice Ruth Smith, and grandsons William Daniel Whitten and Michael David Whitten.
Lynn, as she was commonly known, was born to Mary and Olin Smith on October 12, 1930 in Gadsden, Alabama. Lynn graduated from Auburn University where she met her future husband, Bill. After Bill and Lynn married, they moved to Borger, Texas where Lynn taught high school home economics and then transitioned to stay-at-home mom. Lynn and Bill later moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where Lynn was active in church, taught high school home economics, and worked as a juvenile probationary officer. Lynn and Bill eventually relocated to San Jose, CA and then retired in Phoenix, AZ. A few years following Bill’s passing, Lynn moved first to Tulsa, OK and then Albuquerque, NM to be near her son and daughter-in-law.
Lynn enjoyed singing and sang in the church choir as well as the choir where she lived in Tulsa. Later in life, she would often burst out in song to the amusement of those around her. Lynn always appreciated fine dresses, fancy hats, needlework and Victorian era clothes. She had a keen eye for detail and could spend twice as long as most people in a museum.
Lynn’s family held a private memorial service for her.
If you desire, you may make a contribution in her memory to the American Bible Society at 1865 Broadway, New York, New York, 10023.
