Mary Emeline Montoya, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 19th, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 85. Born on September 14, 1939, in Rudy, Arkansas, Mary lived a full life filled with love, compassion, and resilience.
Mary was the daughter of Henry Albert and Julia Ellen O'Kelley. She grew up in a close-knit family, surrounded by the warmth of her parents and siblings. She was preceded in death by her seven brothers and one sister, who were all a cherished part of her life. Mary's bond with her family remained strong throughout her life, even as she faced profound loss, including the cherished memory of her daughter, Jeanene Cottrill, and her beloved husband, Ben Montoya, whom she married on May 27th, 1977 in Dallas, Texas
Mary graduated from Rudy High School in 1956, displaying early signs of her determination and commitment to education. She later pursued her dream of a higher education graduating from the University of New Mexico in 1989. Her academic journey was a testament to her strong and independent spirit, which she inspired in those around her.
A dedicated member of her community, Mary served as treasurer for Second Presbyterian church and worked with the Boy Scouts Of America, instilling values of leadership and service in the younger generation. Her passion for her community and her unwavering support for those in need showcased her loving and compassionate nature.
Mary will be fondly remembered for her exceptional talent in quilting, a hobby that allowed her to express her creativity and warmth. Each quilt she created was a labor of love, often shared with family and friends, wrapping them in comfort and warmth, just as she did throughout her life.
Mary's legacy lives on through her loving family. She is survived by her grandchildren; Kelsie Cottrill, Nathan Benac, Michael Cottrill, and Christopher Cottrill, who provided her with endless joy and pride. She is also survived by her step children, Dorothy Sisneros, Rita Montoya, and Ruben Montoya, who will carry her memory in their hearts.
Mary Emeline Montoya's life was a profound example of strength and independence. Her loving spirit touched the lives of many, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A funeral service to honor Mary's life will be held at Second Presbyterian church on February 13th, 2025 at 10:00 AM. In celebration of her remarkable journey, family and friends are invited to gather and share their memories of a woman who embodied kindness, resilience, and love.
