Mary Nell Knoebel, beloved mother and friend, died Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was 86 years old.
A lifelong talented artist who loved to quilt, paint, draw, and silversmith, Nell was born on December 4, 1935, in Denver, Colorado, to Blanche (Hanratty) Knoebel and Ferdinand Clark Knoebel.
Nell's earliest memories were of spending time in Florida near the ocean. She attended high school in Indianapolis and college at St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, eventually settling in Louisville, Kentucky, where she met and married Edwynn Burckle, with whom she had three children. Nell was the owner of the Burckle Gallery on Lexington Road in Louisville. Her love of nature led her to move to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she lived for forty years in a one-of-a-kind adobe home, creating a beautiful xeriscape garden, which she always tended with care. She loved watching professional football and followed her favorite team, the Denver Broncos, with passion. She was also unmatched at financial investing.
Nell was an immensely talented woman known for her outgoing, charming, and vibrant personality. She was the best gift giver in the world and equally wonderful at receiving a gift, making you think she had never before been given something quite so thoughtful. Her family and friends will forever remember her beautiful smile and the twinkle in her eye when she looked at you with her sideways glance.
Nell is mourned by her three children, Mary Wynn "Wendy" Glidden (John), Christopher Clark Burckle (Jill), and Adam Matthew Burckle (Mary Lee). Nell also leaves her cherished grandchildren, BJ, Matthew, and Christopher Glidden (Wendy and John); Caroline, Clark, and Collin Burckle (Chris and Jill); and Erin and Leanna Burckle (Adam and Mary Lee). Nell also is survived by four-soon to be five-great grandchildren, Elijah, Theo, and Noah Glidden (Matthew and Valentina); and Mila Glidden (Christopher and Maria). She leaves to cherish her memory her step-great grandchildren, Keaganne, Kaelynn and Kinnley (BJ and Mary).
Nell died in the beautiful adobe home she loved in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. In place of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Nell's honor to the St. Jude's Society or the Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona.
No memorial service will be held. Her family will be having a private celebration of her life. Nell will be dearly missed by her family and dear friends.
