Mary Constance Hicks

Mary (Lynn) Constance Hicks, age 90, of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2023, on her 69th wedding anniversary. Mary Constance Lindauer was born on March 17, 1933, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where her father, Oscar and mother, Eleanor were living while he was serving in the U.S. Navy.

She lived most of her early life in Annapolis, Maryland during her father's career in the Navy and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1951. That year, Lynn met Midshipman James N. Hicks, Jr. on a blind date for a dance at the U.S. Naval Academy. Lynn and Jim were married on June 4, 1954, the same day that he graduated from the Naval Academy. Jim was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. During the next 27 years, they lived in Ohio, Illinois, California, New Mexico, Florida, Thailand, and Hawaii. She lived in Maryland with their children while Jim served a year at Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

Lynn enjoyed being an Air Force officer's wife and the mother of their three children. Most of the time they lived on Air Force bases and Lynn participated in Officers Wives Club activities and was a Red Cross volunteer. When Jim retired in 1981, they moved to Albuquerque and Lynn finished her studies in 1984 for the Bachelors of Arts degree in Education at the University of New Mexico. She was employed by St. Charles Catholic School as a 2nd grade teacher and started her graduate studies at UNM for the Master of Arts in Education, majoring in reading specialist and art therapy.

She was hired by Albuquerque Public Schools and subsequently completed her Masters Degree in 1987. Lynn taught at various elementary schools and a middle school until her retirement from APS on May 31, 1998.

Lynn is survived by husband, Jim and daughter, Pamela Hicks; sons, David Hicks and his wife Cathy, Brian Hicks and his wife, Vivian; brother-in-law, Dale Hicks; niece-in-law, Carolyn Matthews and her husband, Gary; three grandchildren: Ashleigh Hicks, Sabra Dake, and Brandon Hicks; and four great- grandchildren: Colin Dake, Addison Hicks, Bowen Hicks, and Bella Hicks.

A Rosary will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2023, 10:30 a.m., followed by a mass at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 811 Guaymas Pl NE, Albuquerque, followed by entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, Lynn requested that donations be made to Catholic charities.
