On Tuesday, May 10, 2020, Heaven received an angel, Mary Lou (Baca) Griego. Mary Lou was born on August 13, 1930, in Grants, NM to Eduardo and Nicanora Baca. It was there that she met the love of her life Steve Griego who she married on April 18, 1953.
Mary Lou was devoted to her husband Steve to whom she was married for 47 years, thirty-two of those years, she became his primary caregiver as a result of paralysis he sustained in a mining accident.
She is survived by 6 children, Steve Jr. (Dianne), Mary Lou Gottlieb, Daniel, Kathleen, Diana Chavez (Leon), and Rebecca Griego. Mary Lou had 8 grandsons: Kyle (Tanna), Steven (LeAnn), Eric (Amie), Jason, Joel, Karl (Kassia), Joshua (Chris), Gregory (Sydnie); and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she had 3 brothers and one sister who also predeceased her, Efren (Delene), Eddie (Margo), and Alex (Carol) and Luella Baca; and she is also survived by her sister, Rosita Chavez (Eloy).
Until the last 2 years, Mary Lou was a lifelong resident of Grants, NM, where she was an active member of the Catholic Church and a 75-year Professed Member of the Third Order now known as Order Franciscan Secular.
Mary Lou was a housewife during her early years and after becoming the caregiver for her husband; she also worked as a clerk for several judges in the Grants Municipal Court System, after which she was a bookkeeper for 35 years until she retired at the age of 80. Because of the nature of her work, Mary Lou became very well known and loved by so many in the community.
After retirement, Mary Lou enjoyed visiting and traveling with family. She liked going to the Casino where she could socialize with the many people she knew.
A Rosary will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10:00 a.m., St Theresa of Avila Catholic Church, 213 Smith St., Grants, NM, Interment will directly follow mass at Grants Memorial Park Cemetery
Grants, NM 87020 with a reception to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall 1601 E. Roosevelt Ave. in Grants, NM.
