Mary Louise (Arning) Galloway

June 17, 1917 — May 21, 2017

Louise (Mary Louise Arning) Galloway passed away on May 21, 2017. She was 99 years old, and just 4 weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She was a wonderful mother and person. Louise was born on June 17, 1917, in Springer, NM, to Arthur C. and Mamie Arning. She lived on a farm north of Springer on what was known as the French Tract. She had an interesting life on the farm through good times and not so good in the dust bowl days in the 30’s. She worked the farm with her dad, helped can food with her mom, and rode her horse, Dunny, to gather up the cows and to visit her friends down their little dirt road.

After she graduated from Springer High School, she went to stay in Logan with relatives, where she met Bob Galloway. After their marriage they farmed for a while before moving to Albuquerque, which was then a small town. They purchased a lot in the N. Valley that was then filled with tumbleweeds and dirt roads and they made a loving home there. Bob died in 1984, but mom continued to live in their home and irrigate the big backyard from the irrigation ditch, watering her roses and trees and attending nearby Harwood (now Grace) Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Peggy (Carl) Wheeler, Sandy (Chris) Garcia and Shirley Reiger and friend, Erwin Reichert; eight grandchildren, Cooper, Jeff, Greg and Brenda (Francisco) de la Pena, David (Monica) and Stacey (Chris) Hankel, Elaine (Keith) Langlois, and Tanya (Ben) Nolen; her loving brother, Charles (Kathryn) Arning; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren, Madison, Olivia, Austin and Avery, Adrian, Blake, and Jeff’s children; other relatives and friends, including those in Oklahoma where her dear sister, Arthie Gilmore, lived.

She wrote a memoir of her life, “My Life on the French Tract.” Many of her relatives received and enjoyed a copy of that book as well as others in the Springer area of New Mexico.

We would like to thank the staff of Stardust Place who took such good, loving care of mom for the past 6 years. We will miss our mom forever, but are so grateful that we had her in our lives.
