Mary Martha (Downey) Day

Words cannot fully express the beauty that Mary Martha Downey Day brought to life. By being fully present, she made each person encountered feel special and included. Above all she wanted people to know how much she loved and believed in them.

A brilliant intellect, Mary was pioneer in medicine, achieving a Bachelor in Medical Technology and a Masters of Public Health which she put into the service of others via mentoring and care. Mary was also an artist – playing both piano and church organ. Her rose garden was a visual manifestation of the beautiful person she was. Her prolific knitting benefited hundreds of infants with thousands of booties and blankets. Mary didn’t knit with yarn alone, she wove a tapestry of love and joy all around her. She welcomed all into her heart and home, shared her baking, and was always up for a card game or a cocktail. Mary and Jim’s quiet generosity touched leagues – including the Little Sisters of the Poor whom they hosted each summer during missions.

A devout Catholic, Marianite, and Woman’s Guild member, Mary embodied the spirit of Jesus. Her faith and actions inspired and brought many a heart to God. Warm and generous, Mary and Jim lovingly made sacrifices to provide a good life for their sons and delighted in spoiling their granddaughters, Riley and Casey. The joyous, humorous, and impish way she approached life fostered a sense of fun in others.

Mary Martha Downey Day died peacefully Monday, August 7, 2017 after a 12 month battle with cancer. Mary is survived by her husband, James; sons, David and James and their families; and her sister, Catherine, along with numerous beloved family and friends.

Come celebrate Mary’s well-lived life as she smiles with us. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. with Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. at FRENCH – University. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 11, 2017, 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont St. NE followed by Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery
